TJX Rewards® Platinum Mastercard®

Secure application on issuer’s website

If you regularly shop at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls or HomeGoods, the rewards can quickly add up for nice discounts that are easy to apply at checkout. But the Mastercard version doesn’t offer much incentive as you’ll only earn 1 point per dollar at non-TJX stores—and you’ll want to be sure you can pay the bill in full because the APR is higher than the average store card.

Decent Rewards for Loyal TJ Maxx Shoppers

The TJX Rewards® Platinum Mastercard® earns bonus rewards on purchases made at TJX Companies brands, including T.J.Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Homesense stores. It also earns 1% back on all other card purchases outside of the TJX brand anywhere Mastercard is accepted. While it’s not an ideal rewards card for everyday purchases or as a primary card, the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard can be a valuable card for regular shoppers at TJX brand stores.

Pros

  • Good rewards rate at TJX family of brands
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fees

Cons

  • Rewards can only be redeemed with TJX brand family
  • Low rewards rate outside TJX (Mastercard only)
  • Reward certificates expire
  • Extremely high APR

Card Highlights

The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard is specifically designed for TJX brand shoppers. Some card highlights include:

  • 5% back on eligible TJX brand purchases
  • 1% back on other eligible purchases
  • New cardholders receive 10% off their first purchase
  • Earn a $10 rewards certificate for every 1,000 points earned
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fees

Sign-Up Bonus

When you are approved for the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard, you receive a card sign-up bonus of 10% off your first store purchase. The bonus comes as a coupon, and the discount doesn't apply to gift cards.

Where you can use the bonus depends on how you apply. If you apply using a desktop or tablet, you can use the coupon online or in stores. If you apply from a mobile device, you can only use the coupon in stores. Other terms may apply.

Earning Rewards

The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard earns a percentage back on card purchases, with its highest rate reserved for shopping trips to TJX brand stores:

  • 5% back on eligible TJX brand purchases
  • 1% back on other eligible card purchases

The 5% bonus rate applies to eligible in-store and online TJX brand purchases. Rewards come in the form of points, with one point awarded for each dollar spent.

Redeeming Rewards

Once you've accumulated 1,000 points, you're automatically issued a Rewards Certificate for use on select purchases online and at participating TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Homesense stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Reward certificates come in $10 or $20 denominations and are available within 48 hours of meeting the required points threshold.

Do TJX Rewards Certificates Expire?

Unfortunately, you could lose rewards if you hold on to them too long. Rewards points never expire for the life of the program, but any Rewards Certificates received will expire two years after the issue date.

Card Benefits and Perks

The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard offers select brand benefits and rewards within the TJX family of stores. Here's what's included with the card:

  • Generous store rewards: The card earns 5% back on all eligible purchases at TJX stores, like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Homesense.
  • Mobile access: Cardholders can access their Rewards Certificates digitally by linking their card to the TJ Maxx mobile app.
  • Exclusive store perks: Cardholders receive invitations to exclusive TJX shopping events throughout the year.
  • No foreign transaction fees: You won't pay additional fees on purchases made outside of the U.S. when using your TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard.
  • Mastercard benefits: As a Mastercard, it comes with added cardholder benefits like zero liability protection, identity theft protection, and Mastercard Global emergency assistance.

Drawbacks

While the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard holds value for loyal TJX brand fans, it may only be right for some. Here are some disadvantages to consider before deciding whether to get the card.

  • Two card options: When you apply, the card issuer determines which card, if any, to approve you for. If your credit isn't good enough to get the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard, you may be approved for the TJX Rewards® Credit Card instead, which is good for use only in TJX brand stores.
  • High APR: Like many co-branded store cards, the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard has a fairly high regular APR. You will pay costly interest charges if you carry a balance on the card.
  • Limited redemptions: You can only redeem rewards earned with the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard for discounts on future store purchases. Other rewards credit cards may offer more flexibility in terms of redemption options.
  • Rewards Certificates can expire: Points earned with the card do not expire, but Rewards Certificates expire two years after the issue date.

Annual Fee

Credit card issuers charge annual fees on select credit cards to access the card's rewards program and other card benefits. It can be worth paying, provided you can earn enough rewards or utilize card perks to offset the added cost. The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard has no annual fee, so all of the value received from rewards earned stays in your pocket.

Other Fees

The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard only earns 1% back on purchases outside of TJX stores, so it's probably not the best option when traveling. Still, the card charges no foreign transaction fees, so it's a good card to have in your wallet for purchases outside the U.S.

Recommended Credit Score

Most credit card issuers do not disclose the criteria you must meet to qualify for a particular credit card, and that includes credit score requirements. Generally, it's recommended that you have a good to excellent credit score to qualify for a rewards credit card, including the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard. A good credit score is considered a FICO score of 670 and above. Card issuers take various factors like income and credit utilization into account when approving card applications.

Is the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard Worth It?

If you regularly shop at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or other stores in the family of brands, the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard might make sense to have. The card earns a high rate on store purchases, which could help you save money on future shopping trips.

If you shop at TJX brand stores sparingly, another rewards card will offer more value and benefits better suited to your spending habits and needs. With 1% back on purchases outside the TJX ecosystem, it's not a good everyday rewards card.
