New cardholders can earn 20,000 bonus miles after spending $500 with the card during the first three months of account opening. Dollar Equivalent: $360 (20,000 Capital One Rewards Miles * 0.018 base)

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card features several standout benefits, including the ability to transfer miles to Capital One travel partners—an uncommon feature on a card with no annual fee. Plus, the ability to transfer miles to travel partners—both airlines and hotels—is arguably the most attractive feature of this travel card.

A No-Annual Fee Card That Earns Valuable Miles

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card may work well for travel credit card users who want to earn rewards without the cost of an annual fee. The lack of foreign transaction fees makes it a good fit for frequent international travelers as well.

It also gives you the opportunity to earn 1.25 miles per dollar on every purchase. The card doesn’t offer bonus spending categories (except for hotel and rental car purchases you make through Capital One Travel). So, it’s simple to earn miles and track your rewards. However, the regular 1.25 miles per dollar rewards rate is limited compared with several other no-annual-fee card offers. If your credit is in good shape, you may be able to qualify for a card with a higher rewards rate—even on accounts that don’t charge annual fees.

Pros

  • No annual fee
  • Ability to earn transferable points to use on travel partners
  • No foreign transaction fees

Cons

  • Earning rate is lower than some of the competition
  • Not useful if you don't spend in dining, entertainment, streaming, and supermarket categories

Sign-Up Bonus

When you open a new Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, you have the opportunity to earn 20,000 bonus miles. To qualify for the one-time new cardholder offer, you must spend at least $500 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.

What Our Credit Card Experts Are Saying

“I’ve found this to be a solid beginner card. When I signed up for it years ago, this was a great no-annual-fee card with plenty of decent travel perks such as travel protections and no foreign transaction fees (Rates & Fees). For a long time, this was my default for making personal travel-related purchases, and I like how I can easily combine points with other cards in the Capital One family.

“I also frequent the Capital One Cafe on my “self-care Sundays” after hot yoga and going to the farmer’s market, and I love the half-off drinks!”

Introductory APR

New cardholders can enjoy 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months their accounts are open, after which the 19.49% - 29.49% (Variable) APR applies (Rates & Fees) based on creditworthiness. The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card charges a 3% introductory balance transfer fee for transferred balances during the 15-month promotion. After that, 4% on the amount of each transferred balance that posts to your account at the offered promotional APR.

Regular APR

Once the 0% introductory APR period expires, the card’s regular annual percentage rate of 19.49% - 29.49% (Variable) will kick in for purchases. The APR on your account is based on your creditworthiness.

Whichever APR the issuer offers you, it will be variable. A variable APR means that your interest rate may adjust up or down periodically with the Prime Rate.

Credit Requirements

To qualify for a new Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card account with all the bells and whistles, Capital One requires you to have excellent credit. Unfortunately, the card issuer doesn’t disclose a recommended credit score. So it's tough to know the exact minimum credit score you need before you apply.

In addition to a credit score review, Capital One says your credit report should show that you have never:

  • Filed bankruptcy
  • Defaulted on a loan
  • Paid a credit obligation 90 days late (or worse) in the last 12 months

Your credit report also needs a credit card or loan that’s at least three years old. And the account should have a credit limit that’s higher than $5,000.

If you qualify for the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card for Good Credit account (instead of the excellent credit offer), your APR will be slightly higher. You'll also miss out on the 0% introductory APR offer and the sign-up bonus.

Credit Card Benefits

On top of the rewards and new cardholder bonus offer detailed above, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card comes with several other benefits worth mentioning.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card may be a good choice of payment when you’re traveling abroad. The card does not feature added foreign transaction fees (Rates & Fees)—an attractive benefit for a card without an annual fee.

Emergency Card Replacement

You can request an emergency replacement from your card issuer if your Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is ever lost or stolen.

Free Credit Score

You can check your credit score (VantageScore 3.0 based on your TransUnion credit report) through CreditWise® from Capital One. This benefit is available to anyone—cardholders and non-cardholders alike.

Book Trips With a Price Match Guarantee

If you find a better price for a rental car, hotel or flight than what's offered on Capital One's site, you can submit a price match claim to Capital One Travel and get the difference refunded. Even if you've already booked your trip, you can still submit a claim if you find a better price within 24 hours of booking.

Redeeming Rewards

When you’re ready to cash in the rewards you’ve earned on your Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, there are several ways to do so.

Transfer Miles to Partners

When you make eligible travel purchases using your Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, you can redeem your rewards as a statement credit. Be sure to request the credit within 90 days from the date the travel purchase posts to your account. Otherwise, this option may not be available.

You can transfer the miles you earn to 15+ transfer partners. This allows you flexibility with your Capital One miles and book directly with your favorite loyalty program. This is an unusual feature to find in a no-fee rewards credit card.

PayPal

Another way to tap into the rewards on your Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is to redeem them via PayPal (travel-related or non-travel purchases). Through your PayPal account, you can apply Capital One rewards toward online purchases from third-party merchants that accept PayPal payments.

Amazon

You can link your Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card to your Amazon account. By doing so, you will be given the option to pay with rewards when you check out at Amazon.com.

Fees

Here are some of the fees you may encounter with this card.

Balance Transfer Fee

Some balance transfers on your Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card may include an additional balance transfer fee while others do not. For balance transfers that feature your regular account APR, no balance transfer fee (Rates & Fees) will apply.

On the other hand, if Capital One offers you the chance to transfer a balance at a promotional APR, the card issuer may charge you a 3% transfer fee if you take advantage of the offer. After that, 4% on the amount of each transferred balance that posts to your account at the offered promotional APR.

The card offers a flat 2 miles per dollar on every purchase you make, every day, giving cardholders predictability and simplicity. You'll also earn 5 miles per dollar on all hotel, vacation rental and rental car purchases that you make with the card through Capital One's proprietary travel booking platform.

In the end, deciding between these two cards should generally come down to your spending habits. If you plan to use the card for $1,056 (or more) in purchases each month, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card gives you the bigger bang for your buck in terms of travel rewards.

Even after you factor in the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card's $95 annual fee (Rates & Fees), you should come out ahead in overall value. But if you don’t believe you'll spend $1,056 or more on your new account each month, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is probably the better fit.

Is the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card Right for You?

As a financially strapped college student, the idea of earning credit card rewards on my spending appealed to me. But I wasn’t a fan of the annual fee. Fast forward a few years and I began to learn how to earn and leverage credit card rewards better and my opinion changed. I now hold several premium travel cards that have a hefty annual fee. I get much more value from these cards than I pay out in yearly fees.

Still, annual fee cards aren’t for everyone. Some people dislike annual fees on principle. Others may feel they don’t have room for another fee-heavy card in their wallet. If you fit into either of these categories and you're looking for an affordable travel credit card, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is worth a look.

However, here are some alternatives:

  • Travel cards: You may be able to find a travel credit card that offers higher rewards or better perks, especially if you have a good to excellent credit score and you don’t mind paying an annual fee for some added value.
  • Cash-back cards: Some cash-back credit cards (like the Citi Double Cash Card) offer higher rewards, which you could spend on travel purchases or anything else.
  • Balance transfer cards: Better deals on balance transfers may be available too.
  • Hotel cards: If you’re a fan of a particular airline or hotel brand, a co-branded credit card (like something from the Marriott Bonvoy or IHG Rewards collection) might also be worth considering.
