I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking to save a buck or two on groceries. I’m not saying I’m one of those folks who goes to multiple supermarkets on a weekly basis, but I do find items that are on sale, try to use coupons (though I’m not extreme by any means) and stick with generic items when I can.

Of course, I’ve been using rewards cards to earn points while I’m at the grocery store, but now there’s a credit card that can help me earn some significant cash back rewards — the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. We’re talking a way better ROI than what I would get by clipping coupons and driving from place to place to find deals on my grocery staples.

Blue Cash Everyday Benefits

Blue Cash Everyday Review

For a card that doesn’t charge an annual fee, the Blue Cash Everyday Card offers some decent rewards for those who plan on using it for grocery and gas purchases. If you’re someone who spends a lot at the supermarket (perhaps you have a bunch of teenage boys who can’t seem to get enough food?), it’s hard to beat the Blue Cash Everyday’s supermarket rewards rate without paying an annual fee. Plus the long-term introductory 0% APR is extraordinary and is perfect for carrying a balance on large ticket items.

This credit card is a pretty sweet deal for all the frugal people out there. It’s targeted to help people save money on some of their biggest variable expenses: gas and groceries. Considering how much families can spend each month on both these line items in their budget, there’s nothing wrong with getting all the help you can get.

$150 Welcome Offer

The Blue Cash Everyday sign-up bonus is substantial considering there is no annual fee. New cardholders can earn a $150 welcome offer after spending $1,000 during the first three months of the account. Most people will hit this spending requirement quickly with their budgeted spending on gas, groceries and other essentials.

Blue Cash Everyday Rewards

First off, you don’t need to pay an annual fee for this card, so your cash-back rewards are essentially free. That is, assuming you pay off your balance in full and on time. You can earn a staggering 3% cash back on purchases at U.S. supermarkets for up to $6,000 a year. That’s about $180 back right there if you spend the maximum allowed amount. Afterward, it’ll be 1%.

The card offers unlimited 2% cash back at qualifying U.S. department stores and U.S gas stations and 1% on all other purchases. There’s also a $150 welcome offer if you spend $1,000 within the first three months of account opening. These rewards will come in the form of statement credits.

2% cash backU.S. gas stations & select U.S. department stores
1% cash backAll other eligible purchases

Note: Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit.

0% Introductory APR on New Purchases and Balance Transfers

The Blue Cash Everyday Card offers a 0% introductory APR for purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months. In other words, you can technically carry a balance during the introductory period without paying interest. As with any credit product, it’s best to read the fine print to see if there are any exceptions to this offer (such as it being terminated if you don’t make the minimum payments on time).

New Purchases0% introductory APR on all purchases made within the first 15 months of account opening.
Balance Transfers0% introductory APR for the first 15 months on approved balance transfers within 60 days of account opening.

Blue Cash Everyday Credit Score

The good and bad news is that the Blue Cash Preferred Card usually requires a very good credit score. That’s typical of rewards cards that offer excellent perks like this one. In some cases they may consider your income, but American Express isn’t very forthcoming about that.

That’s why it’s a good idea to check your credit score and see what you can qualify for now. And keep in mind that even if you qualify, you may not get a high credit limit (again, it depends on a number of factors).

Purchase Benefits

Not only do cardholders get accelerated cash-back rewards at the grocery store and gas station, but the Blue Cash Everyday also offers a collection of impressive purchase benefits like car rental insurance and a free ShopRunner membership.

Car Rental InsuranceThe Blue Cash Everyday offers a collision damage waiver, as well as rental car protections against theft when you pay for the entire eligible rental with your card. However, not all vehicle types or rentals are covered. Please read important exclusions and restrictions.
Global AssistWhile cardmembers are responsible for costs,  you have access to available medical, legal, financial or other select emergency coordination and assistance services, including medical and legal referrals, assistance with cash wires, passport replacement and missing luggage whenever you travel more than 100 miles from home.
ShopRunner MembershipThe card offers a complimentary ShopRunner membership that gets you free two-day shipping on eligible items at a growing network of online stores.
Entertainment AccessGet access to available pre-sale tickets and card member-only events through your American Express account.

Blue Cash Everyday Vs. Blue Cash Preferred® Card. Which Is Better?

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express offers many of the same perks as the Blue Cash Everyday. Both of these cards are designed for cardholders to spend at U.S. supermarkets and U.S. gas stations, so either of these cards will work for that.

Blue Cash Preferred Card Benefits

However, where the Blue Cash Preferred shines is the amount of cash-back rewards you’ll receive. Yes, it does come with a $95 annual fee, but you can earn 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 each year), 6% cash back on qualifying U.S. streaming subscriptions, 3% cash back on transit (think rideshare or public transportation) and at U.S. gas stations and 1% on all other purchases.

The introductory bonus is also higher.  Instead of a $150 welcome offer, you’ll be able to earn $250 welcome if you spend $1,000 within the first three months of account opening. That’s almost twice the amount of rewards for spending the same amount. The signing bonus can easily offset the annual fee in the first year.

Which Is Right for You?

When deciding between both cards, you’ll want to think about your spending habits. The Blue Cash Preferred can be worth it if you’re able to offset the annual fee and earn additional cash back once you’re “even.” So look at what you currently spend at U.S. supermarkets, transit and gas stations to see which option is best.

Annual FeeWelcome OfferU.S. SupermarketsU.S. Gas Stations
Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express$0$1503% (up to $6,000 in purchases annually)2%
Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express$95$2506% (up to $6,000 in purchases annually)3%

For example, you could earn up to $180 in cash back rewards each year from purchases at U.S. supermarkets if you spend up to $6,000. It means that for the Blue Cash Preferred to be worth it, you’ll need to spend at least $1,600 at U.S. grocery stores or $1,100 at U.S. gas stations and $1,100 at U.S. supermarkets combined to offset the annual fee.

In other words, the Blue Cash Everyday is better for those who aren’t going to spend a lot. The Blue Cash Preferred is better for those who have higher spending habits, particularly at U.S. supermarkets and gas stations. If you can’t spend enough to get at least $95 in cash-back rewards, then the Blue Cash Everyday is probably better.
